Description

The Environment and Energy department is seeking an Environmental Outreach Specialist to manage a peer-to-peer outreach program to engage community groups to conduct outreach on residential organics; advance the department's socially inclusive outreach strategy to reach multicultural, low-income, and disadvantaged communities to take environmental action; and promote department programs and educational resources through diverse community partnerships. This position is located at 701 Fourth Avenue South, Suite 700, Minneapolis, MN.

The Environmental Education and Outreach Unit is responsible for educating the community on department services, encouraging environmental stewardship, and motivating individuals to take action to preserve and enhance the environment for future generations.

The mission of the Hennepin County Environment and Energy department is to preserve and enhance the environment for future generations through the responsible management of wastes and natural resources and the promotion of environmental stewardship.

Bilingual skills in English and Somali, Hmong, and/or Spanish are preferred but not required.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Manage a peer-to-peer outreach program to engage community groups to conduct outreach on residential organics including grant program administration.

  • Coordinate the recruitment and selection process for projects that receive funding.

  • Develop contract documents and provide contract administration for grants and service vendors; request and track payments for grantees and vendors.

  • Maintain program documents, partnership database, and web page; prepare summary reports and make recommendations.

  • Advance the department's socially inclusive outreach strategy to reach multicultural, low-income, and disadvantaged communities to take environmental action.

  • Promote department programs and educational resources through diverse community partnerships.

  • Solicit community feedback to enhance programming and materials as appropriate for diverse audiences.

  • Assist in the review and development of educational materials.

  • Coordinate Limited English Proficiency services and relationships with multicultural media outlets and service vendors.

  • Provide train-the-trainer presentations to community groups and staff educational booths at community events.

Best Qualified Candidates will have:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in behavioral/social science, environmental studies, public health, public administration, or a field appropriate to the area of specialization.

  • Experience:
    • Conducting community outreach on environmental issues.

    • Performing grant administration.

    • Performing research, data collection, analysis, and report preparation.

    • Using data management software, such as Microsoft Excel and/or SharePoint.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to:
    • Work with people and organizations that represent significant diversity in culture, values, education, occupation, and income.

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the organization.

    • Gather community feedback and incorporate it into program design.

    • Manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities.
