J Gilbert's is always such a great spot to grab dinner. It can be casual or elevated, and it always feels special.
I always love the ambiance and low lighting in here, especially with the fire places going. It gives a definite vibe to the experience.
We made a reservation and were seated promptly. I ordered a the sparkling blackberry martini and it was lovely.
We didn't order an appetizer, but I got the Caesar salad and the filet with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. All were lovely!
We got the crème brûlée for dessert and the coconut cake, which were delicious as well.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Mar 13, 2023Previous reviewI will forever love this place!
My mom wanted to come here for her birthday, and I happily obliged. We love coming here for special occasions. It was easy to make a reservation online, we made it on a Tuesday early evening.
We walked in and we're given a card in an envelope that said happy birthday (great touch). We were seated in a large booth and opened it, which it was a handwritten note that she would get a complimentary dessert to celebrate. We also love the ambiance of this place. It's relaxing, dimly lit but has fires accompanying the mood.
We both ordered wine, and we're given bread. The bread was warm and served with two kinds of whipped butter. Whipped butter is always better since it's not a hard rock when you try to spread it lol. I also got a house salad. The flavors are a great combination and compliment each other well. I'm not a huge sweets gal so their red wine house dressing is perfect.
My mom and I both got the filet combo. You get your choice of size of filet, an addition of your choice, and 2 sides. I got the 4 oz filet with the bourbon maple shrimp. The sides I picked were the Brussels sprouts and poblano au gratin potatoes. The steak was delicious and cooked perfectly, and the shrimp were amazing! I loved the light sweet glaze on them- it wasn't too much. Potatoes were creamy and cheesy, and Brussels were cooked perfection.
My mom got the filet and the scallops and had nothing but great things to say about those as well.
The dessert she decided to get was a chocolate cake that was super delicious and rich. They brought it out with a candle to make it really special :) we will be back soon!Nov 8, 2021Previous reviewFantastic dining experience. I asked for a wine suggestion and our waiter was so knowledgeable, I settled for the conundrum red blend. The salad was fresh and light and the streak was cooked to medium perfection! Really looking forward to going back.

Okay I went for my birthday last year and was not impressed but met some colleagues last night and I'm grateful I revisited. The Seafood Mixed Grill was amazing, perfect combination of a little bit of everything seafood..which I enjoyed. The service and ambiance was good but the food was a game changer. Hats off to the the chef, I will now be back soon.
I also had the velvet cake but it was kinds too rich for me and will have to try a different dessert.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sara M.St Charles, MO9224Apr 13, 2024
I really don't care that this is a chain restaurant because the food is so good I consider it to be my favorite restaurant! Steak or salmon are my usual and of course you have to have the lobster risotto! All their cocktails are well crafted and delicious! I'm obsessed and go there for every special occasion or even I just need some steak in my life and a good night out

I made a quick stop in here for a quick sip at the bar. There was no wait and no one sitting in the lobby. The ambiance was very romantic. Dark lighting and high booths.
The menu seemed to offer some great food. I'll definitely plan on stopping back here for a full dinner.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Lillian L.Houston, TX1209Feb 19, 2024
Overall I was pleased with the food (plating could use some work). I will say that service took particularly long, our waiter was friendly, but just didn't see him often and we waited a while for the food and check. Nice atmosphere, dim lighting, and calm so it's a really nice place if you have the time!

I tried the house salad and the 8oz fillet with green beans and lobster Mac & Cheese. The house salad had fresh ingredients and it was served with a delicious creamy red wine house dressing. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. So much flavor. Green beans were good. The lobster Mac & Cheese was incredible. One of the best I've ever had. Very warm bread was served with the salad. Excellent meal. Monica was our server and she was excellent, friendly and great service.

The crumbled blue cheese and the buttermilk blue cheese dressing makes the salad. What distracts from the salad is the lettuce with lots of brown spots. I ordered the fillet medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. I ordered the blue cheese butter as my sauce which Really enhanced the enjoyment of eating this steak. I was disappointed with how small the asparagus was. * Note to self, ask about the asparagus before ordering it next time. The green beans with the pecans were delicious.
My son got the creamed corn as one of his sides. He said I needed to try it and they either use sweet corn or added sugar because it was delicious, it could be used as a dessert. My son loves crème brûlée and the portion was larger than normal, no complaints here, and it tasted great. The fresh raspberries were a nice addition. Donald was our server and he was excellent. He was busy and when he wasn't attending to our table, he would often look at us to see if we were trying to get his attention before he would go back to the kitchen or bar. He was very professional. My son and I like the open dining room concept. The noise level was low so it was easy for my son and I to hear each other and enjoy the surroundings. There's plenty of covered parking in the garage that's about 50 yards from their door. - Jan 6, 2023Updated review
J.Gilbert's is one of my favorite steakhouses in STL. Elegant decor, amazing food and attentive service. Classy spot for a special celebration, date night, or a group gathering. If you sign up for their newsletter or check out their FB page, you may even find a coupon (e.g. 20% off your bill). They start off your meal with a complimentary warm loaf of sourdough bread with a side of pastrami butter.
The Prix fixe section offers a good deal at either $51 or $61 for a 3 course meal, and you can select your own sides instead of the suggested ones. They have a good selection of steaks and seafood.
Prix Fixe $51 Combo order:
-Crab bisque - Outstanding! Lots of crab meat and creamy rich soup.
-4oz filet - Delicious cooked medium rare (pink center).
-Maryland crab cake - No filler here, mostly crab meat made into a delightful patty.
-Mushroom risotto - I'm not a huge risotto fan, but this was fantastic.
-Grilled asparagus
-Chocolate Velvet

Classy spot for a special celebration, date night, or a group gathering. They didn't bring bread out after we put in our appetizer order, but did so after requesting some. It was a loaf of sour dough that was a bit too crunchy for my liking.

-Brussel Sprouts - A tad under cooked, a little hard to chew but still good.
-7 layer coconut cake - Just when I thought I didn't have room, this cake is easy to make room for. The pineapple ice cream was a delight.
Seabass Special $56 - Perfectly cooked, nice crunch on the outside of the fish.
Since we were here for a birthday celebration, they gave us a complimentary dessert complete with a candle. What a nice touch!

I decided to try this steakhouse for my birthday as it was a promoted post on my instagram. I was disappointed for sure. I ordered an "off the menu" steak which was a 14 oz Bone In Strip, green beans and au gratin potatoes. The green beans had pecans but no glaze to bring the flavor of that and the green beans together, the potatoes were burned on the edge so i'm assuming my piece came from the edge of a pre made pan, the steak was not tender which is weird since I requested medium. The seasoning on the steak wasn't all that either.
My husband ordered the Blackened Chicken Penne which was flavorful but he immediately had bubble guts. He didn't finish the meal.
My free dessert choice was the "seven layer" coconut cake which is really 4 layers of cake so I guess the 3 other layers was the filling in between. Smh.
.I appreciate our server, Scott, for being knowledgeable and pleasant, the service of the food was timely & the ambiance is perfect for a romantic night! All in all, I will not be back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kyle S.Saint Louis, MO07Apr 15, 2024

Everything at JG is first class. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. The service is as good as it gets. And the selection of food and drink is second to none. The main dishes of steak and fish are cooked to perfection. Plenty of great dishes to select from. The thing that sneaks up on you and must be mentioned are the amazing sides. Each side is individually prepared and presented as if they are the main entree. You just can't find a reason to not like your experience here. Great for business dinners or date night. This spot is a must.
