Een historisch lage bezettingsgraad van de productiecapaciteit, een omzetdaling van 14% en een forse afname van de export met 18%. De economische jaarcijfers van de Belgische chemie en life sciences voor 2023 maken duidelijk dat de concurrentiepositie van de sector sterk verzwakt is. Dat vertaalt zich in jobverlies in de chemie en kunststoffen, en een matige jobstijging in de farma en biotech. Sectorfederatie essenscia trekt aan de alarmbel en vraagt dringend een strategisch industriebeleid op alle politieke niveaus. Het Belgisch EU-voorzitterschap en de Europese top van deze week bieden het momentum om van een Industrial Deal een topprioriteit te maken voor de volgende Europese Commissie.
Al 1.000 ondernemingen, federaties en vakbondsorganisaties vanuit alle lidstaten van de Europese Unie hebben de ‘Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal’ ondertekend. Daarmee roepen bedrijfsleiders en sociale partners uit 25 verschillende industriesectoren op om van een strategisch industriebeleid op lange termijn een topprioriteit te maken voor de volgende Europese Commissie. Dit gezamenlijk pleidooi werd gelanceerd tijdens de European Industry Summit op 20 februari bij BASF Antwerpen, in aanwezigheid van de voorzitter van de Europese Commissie Ursula von der Leyen en Belgisch premier Alexander De Croo.
Onder de titel ‘A European Industrial Deal: the time is now’ zette het jaarevent van essenscia de dringende nood aan een strategisch en ambitieus industriebeleid in ons land én in Europa nogmaals uitdrukkelijk bovenaan de politieke en maatschappelijke agenda. Bedrijfsleiders uit de sector, academici en experten doken in het Europese beleid en visten de sleutels op die de chemie- en life sciencesindustrie in Europa kunnen versterken. De samenvattende boodschap was eensluidend: de Europese Green Deal en de Industrial Deal zijn twee zijden van dezelfde munt en geven samen vorm aan de toekomst van Europa.
