Eye Bank Association of India EBAI

Eye Banking in India is more than half a century old. The first eye bank was started in Regional Institute of ophthalmology, Chennai in 1945. Many stalwarts promoted eye donation zealously in their own regions and hence was known only in certain pockets and activities limited to regions where a champion for the cause was working. In 1989 all the stalwarts got together and formed an umbrella body with the main objectives of increasing retrieval of donor corneas, introducing uniform standards in eye banks all over the country and educating public about eye donation and prevention of corneal blindness.
