Lightweight of Friedrichshafen in Germany, has a past of building carbon wheels for horse sulkies used in harness racing. Then someone suggested to its founder Heinz Obermayer to try designing wheels for bicycles – and the rest is history. At first disc wheel for a road bike came out in 1990 and in 1996 it was followed by a spoked wheel. When Johann Museeuw used Lightweight wheels for his victory in the 1996 UCI World Cycling Champiochips, the brand had already established its reputation among pro cyclists. Many top names like Denmark’s Bjarne Riis, Germany’s Jan Ulrich and the American Lance Armstrong rode to stage and overall victories in the Tour de France on Lightweight wheels in the company’s early years in cycling.
