High School Sports Results from 4/22/24

Losses for SHS Softball, NM & MMK Baseball

The Shelton fastpitch softball team lost at Centralia Monday 16 to 4 in five innings. Hailey Schuffenhauer and Cassandra Tyler led the Highclimbers in the loss. Both going 2 for 2 at the plate. Schuffenhauer had a double and a triple with two RBI and a run scored. Tyler scored two runs. Ada Gouley had the ‘Climbers’ fifth hit and scored a run.
Shelton drops to 1-and-13 on the season, 0-and-7 in the Evergreen Conference.
The Highclimbers host Tumwater Wednesday.


The North Mason baseball team lost to Sequim Monday 9 to 1. The Bulldogs got a solo home run by Leland Lopes to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. Caden Atencio was 2 for 2 at the plate. Cole McCormick and William Broughton were 1 for 3. NM drops to 6-and-9 on the season, 3-and-8 in the Olympic League. The boys from Belfair travel to the Wolves Wednesday.


The Mary M. Knight baseball team lost to Taholah Monday 25 to 5. The Owls are 0-and-8 on the season. MMK hosts Wishkah Valley Thursday.

High School Sports Results from 4/20/24

Wins for NM Baseball & Softball

The North Mason baseball team pounded Cascade in Leavenworth Saturday taking both games of a double header. The Bulldogs won the first game 21 to 0 and the score of the second game was 22 to 3 – both in five innings.

Leland Lopes powered the boys from Belfair in the first game, holding the Kodiaks to one hit on the mound, walking one and striking out 13. Lopes’ led NM at the plate, going 4 for 4 with two home runs and six RBI.
Cole McCormick batted in four runs going 3 for 4.
William Broughton was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.
Kingston Serebrykov batted in two runs.

Caden Atencio, Danner Jones and Reid Shumaker led North Mason in the second game.
Atencio picked up the win on the mound, allowing one hit and striking out six in three innings. He also batted in three runs, going 1 for 3 at the plate with a double.
Jones also had three RBI, going 1 for 4.
Shumaker was 1 for 1 with three RBI.
Serebrykov batted in two runs in the second game as well.

With the wins, the Bulldogs improve to 6-and-8 on the season.
North Mason has four games left in the regular season. Two against Sequim (hosting the Woves Tuesday) and two against Bainbridge (hosting the Spartans on April 29th).


The North Mason fastpitch softball team took two games against Cascade in Leavenworth Saturday – both by shutout: 16 to 0 in five innings and 19 to 0 in three innings.

The girls from Belfair held the Kodiaks to one hit in the two games.
Alyssa Dimatteo struck out nine and walked one in the three and two-thirds innings of the first game – facing 13 batters. Taylor Madison pitched one and a third innings in game one – facing five batters.
Jocelyn Walker pitched the second game and gave up one hit, walkde two and struck out five in three innings – facing 12 batters.
In game one, Jordan Young, Jenna Markuson, Mikayla Minnis, and Ava Lavandier each batted in two runs.
In the second game, Stephanie Arbogast batted in three runs. Kennady Carson, Jordan Young, Spencer Kenyon, Ava Lavandier, and Jocelyn Walker had two RBI each.

With the wins, the Bulldogs improve to 7-and-6 on the season. North Mason has seven games left in the regular season. They play at Port Angeles Tuesday.

Shelton Man Injured in Fatal King County Crash

A 34-year-old Shelton man was injured in a fatal head-on crash in King County on Friday morning that involved a semi truck and a transit bus.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash occurred on State Route 18 near the Tiger Mountain Summit about 4:30 AM. The westbound bus crossed the centerline at milepost 25 and struck the eastbound semi head-on. An eastbound SUV struck the back of the semi’s trailer. The highway was blocked for nearly four and a half hours.

Preventing Burns

A scald injury happen at any age, but children, older adults, and people with disabilities are at higher risk. Hot liquids from bath water, hot coffee or tea, and even microwaved soup can cause injuries.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, NFPA, scald burns are the second leading cause of all burn injuries. A scald is a burn from close contact with hot liquid or steam. Scalds are the most common type of burn affecting young children. Children ages four and under are at the most risk for scald burns, because they like to explore and do not know what can hurt them.
