In 2019, we announced the intention to introduce parking charges in our car parks, with Alexandra Palace being one of the only destinations of its type and scale in Greater London not charging for parking. The charges will help us to cover the costs of operating the car parks and support our charity’s work to repair, restore and maintain the Park and Palace, for the benefit of everyone.

Following extensive planning and consultation, we are now ready to install the infrastructure that will enable us to charge for parking. This work – which includes installing pay terminals, ANPR cameras and signage – will take place throughout June and July 2023, with the charges set to be in place this summer. We will provide a specific date as installation works progress.

We want our charging system to be as fair as possible. The first 30 minutes of parking will be free for all, for example, and we have ensured our tariffs are consistent with similar destinations across London. Blue Badge holders will park for free.

We encourage you to find out more about car parking charges via our FAQ page, which provides more context on why we are pursuing this project and how it will work for the variety of visitors to Alexandra Palace. We are determined to get the system right from the start, however we also remain ready to adapt it, if required, once it is in place.

We will keep you up to date with ongoing developments via our dedicated webpage. If you have any questions please contact us via parking@alexandrapalace.com

We thank you in advance for your patience as we complete our preparations for the new system and hope you have the opportunity to enjoy the summer at the Park and Palace.

Car Parking Project Team

Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust

We set out plans to introduce charges in our car parks in 2018 and have carried out a number of years of research and consultation with partners, stakeholders and neighbours, as well as gaining the necessary statutory approvals from our Board and the Charity Commission.

The pandemic meant we had to put the project on hold, but at the start of this year we were once again in a position to progress. Over the last few months we’ve been developing things further, more on which is detailed in the bullet points below, and we are currently working towards late 2022 as a provisional ‘go live’ date.

We’ve always been clear that the charging system, which will include the first 30 minutes free parking for all, is being introduced to generate essential income to help cover the £400,000 annual cost of keeping the car parks open, as well as helping us to maintain and restore the Park and Palace, to ensure that they are here for everyone, for generations to come.

Progress in the first half of this year includes:

We are doing all we can now to get the system right from the start, however we remain ready to adapt the charging system, if required, once we see it in effect. For more detailed information visit our FAQ page and if you have any questions please contact us via visitor.services@alexandrapalace.com

FAQs

The main reason for introducing parking charges is financial. The charges will support our work to care for and improve the Park and Palace for the benefit of all, now and in the future.

All monies raised from car park charges, as with all income raised from activities on site, will go directly towards our charitable purposes – to maintain and improve the Park and Palace, and to deliver great experiences for everyone. We could use the income for a range of things including:

  • Repair projects in and around the building, or upgrades to Park infrastructure and planting;
  • Bringing more spaces back into use for the public to enjoy, including new attractions and facilities;
  • Our creative learning programme, so a wide range of people can continue to learn about, enjoy and benefit from the Park and Palace

The charges have been in operation in all our public car parks from 7 August 2023. The charges will apply seven days a week, 365 days a year.

We have taken independent advice from a sustainable transport planning and research consultancy (Integrated Transport Planning Ltd). They have proposed a tariff structure using information from comparable venues and parkland, on-street parking charges locally and shopping parking, whilst at the same time taking into account our context, operational requirements and the range and visitation patterns of our users.

Yes, we need to provide consistency for our visitors. The charges will apply seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The first 30 minutes of parking will be free of charge.

All vehicles will be charged to park on site for longer than 30 minutes.

Yes. If you are a Blue Badge holder, in order to ensure you are exempt from paying for parking scan your Blue Badge on our onsite payment machines and follow the instructions.

Alternatively, if you are a regular visitor, please contact our team via parking@alexandrapalace.com and we can ensure you are covered for Blue Badge parking, without having to scan your Blue Badge during each visit.

No, they will be the same 365 days of the year. It is important to ensure we are consistent with charging.

Yes you can, though you have to do this within 24 hours of leaving to avoid a Penalty Charge Notice.

You can pay for parking up to 24 hours after your visit. If you do not pay within this timeframe you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

The East Court car park is open seven days a week from 05.30 – 00.30hrs. Last entry is 20.00 each day, excluding event days when hours will vary.

The Grove car park is open seven days a week from 06.00 – 19.00hrs each day, excluding event days when hours will vary.

The Paddocks car park is open for specific events only. Please see onsite signage for more information.

Before any work started we set out criteria to ensure that any proposals respected the site, met the needs of the charity and its operation and the wide range of uses and users. The criteria were used by ITP to assess different parking management options. The criteria included:

  • Any proposed tariffs must be affordable and not unintentionally deter people from visiting and benefiting from the use of the Park and Palace;
  • Infrastructure requirement of the system must be minimal. The location of the car parks in a parkland setting combined with the non-parking uses of some of the car parks necessitates that they are kept free of unnecessary obstructions;
  • Access and egress flows must not be impeded – this is particularly important given that at times large volumes of traffic need to enter or exit the site and the system should not increase queuing time or congestion on AP Way;
  • Cashless payment should be promoted, as the Trust is working towards cashless payment across the site. Holding high volumes of cash is seen as a safety risk;
  • Enforcement should be remotely conducted – the Trust is keen to eliminate the risk associated with officers undertaking manual patrols. Remote enforcement will be cheaper and more effective;
  • Upfront costs should be minimised – the Trust has limited funds and the main stated objective of introducing parking charges is to generate income to fund the delivery of the Trust’s charitable objectives.

The first 30 minutes will be free to allow people time for drop-off, waiting time, and pick-up.

The charging system will be barrier-free, with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at the entrances of each car park.

Creativity Pavilion

Tourists have sought out the landmarks, streets, and alleys of Charles Dickens’s London ever since the death of the world-renowned author. Victorian and Edwardian fans were obsessed with tracking down the locations — dubbed “Dickensland” — that famously featured in his novels. But they were faced with a city that was undergoing rapid redevelopment, where literary shrines were far from sacred. Over the following century, sites connected with Dickens were demolished, relocated, and reimagined.

In this talk, Lee Jackson traces the fascinating history of Dickensian tourism, exploring both real Victorian London and a fictional city shaped by fandom, tourism, and heritage entrepreneurs. From vanishing coaching inns to submerged riverside stairs, hidden burial grounds to apocryphal shops, we will navigate the curious history of an imaginary world.

Lee Jackson is a well-known expert on Victorian London. He is the author of Dirty Old London, Walking Dickens’ London, Palaces of Pleasure and a new book Dickensland: The Curious History of Dickens’s London. Lee has lectured on Victorian topics for libraries and museums throughout London and is an academic advisor to the Dickens Museum.

Theatre Tour with Afternoon Tea

1 Jan 1970 - 21 Jan 2024

Doors open 00:00

Alexandra Palace Theatre

Come hear about the history of London’s oldest new theatre that was hidden from the world for 80 years!

Originally opened in 1875, this historical venue witnessed a myriad of performances, from grand operas to riveting plays and musical spectacles. However, in 1935, it closed its curtains to the public for eight whole decades. Following a five year multi-million-pound restoration project, the theatre emerged from its decades-long slumber, reopening its doors to eager audiences in 2018. Preserved in a beautiful state of arrested decay and frozen in time, the work has created a space that retains the charm and character of the Victorian theatre while being fit to host cutting-edge contemporary productions.

Now, in our 150th year,  explore this captivating and unique space as our tour guides lead you through the enchanting realms of Alexandra Palace Theatre, unravelling the past, delving into its vibrant present, and offering a glimpse into its promising future.

PLUS make your day extra special by enjoying afternoon tea on the theatre stage! Package includes:

  • Assortment of finger sandwiches
  • Scone with jam, cream & butter
  • Selection of cakes / pastries
  • Selection of teas / or coffee

Please note:

IDLES

1 Jan 1970

Doors open

The Great Hall

Boundary-pushing British punk rockers IDLES return to Alexandra Palace for a massive show as part of their extended 2024 world tour.

Following an electrifying performance at the Village Underground earlier in 2023, this promises to be a euphoric experience for fans, cementing the band’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the live music arena.

Known for their ferocious live performances, IDLES bring a unique energy to the stage, creating an atmosphere that is both chaotic and cathartic. The tour coincides with the release of IDLES’ highly anticipated new album TANGK (out 16 February 16th via Partisan Records). Co-produced by Nigel Godrich, Kenny Beats, and Mark Bowen, the 11-track album promises to be a testament to love’s transformative power. Vocalist Joe Talbot describes TANGK as an album of gratitude and power, consisting entirely of love songs. With their recent single Dancer already making waves, featuring backing vocals from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Nancy Whang, the album is shaping up to be IDLES’ most ambitious and striking record yet.
